Subject:

(1) Serial 17538, dated July 2,1982 (2) Serial 17591, dated August 31, 1982 This letter, as were references 1 and 2, is an interim 10 CFR 50.55(e) report concerning the installation of B&W-supplied, non-seismically qualified transmitter mounting brackets for transmitters forming part of the reactor coolant pressure boundary. The assumption of multiple failures of these brackets and their corresponding transmitters during a seismic event could result in an unanalyzed plant condition. As explained in reference 2, the resolution of this concern is to be accomplished by replacing the non-seismically qualified mounting brackets with seisnically qualified mounting brackets and demonstrating that the structural integrity of the existing transmitters mounted on the replacement brackets is not compromised during a seismic event.

CPCo has received a draft field change authorization (FCA) from B&W describing the seismic qualification of the existing transmitters with the replacement brackets. The draft FCA has been approved with comments by Bechtel, and B&W is expected to submit the final FCA by December 31, 1982.

Our present schedule requires the qualified replacement brackets to be shipped to the site and installed with transmitters prior to initial fuel load.
