Mr. Domenic B. Vassallo, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No. 2 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555

Dear Mr. Vassallo:

In the Matter of the

)

Docket Nos. 50-259 Tennessee Valley Authority

)

50-260 50-296 In regard to my letter to you dated May 25, 1982 which described the prompt notification system at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant, several items of that letter need to be clarified or updated as follows.

1.

TVA provided funding through the State of Alabama for the local counties to purchase 65 tone alert radios. The local counties purchased 64 NOAA radios and one tone-activated receiver which is activated by a county civil defense frequency. The local counties distributed 48 of those radios to local institutions and held 17 radios in reserve. Additionally, the counties use 14 tone alert receivers and three two-way radios which operate on county frequencies to provide warning and directions to institutions with large concentrations of people. A description of the tone alert radio system will be placed in the Browns Ferry Radiological Emergency Plan in a future revision.

2.

The five mobile sirens have been received and are now operational.

Very truly yours, TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY 3
