f THE CINCINNATI GAS & ELECTRIC COMPANY CINCINN ATI. OHIO 45201 October 28, 1982 QA-2083 E. A. BORG M AN N SENSOR VICE PRESiOENT U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137 Attention:
Mr. J. G. Keppler Regional Administrator RE:
WM. H. ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION UNIT 1 10CFR50.55(e), ITEM E-29, LACK OF INSPECTION RECORDS FOR NELSON STUDS, DOCKET NO. 50-358 CONSTRUCTION PERMIT NO. CPPR-88, W.O. #57300 JOB E-5590, FILE NO. NRC-7, E-29 Gentlemen:
t This letter constitutes an interim report concerning the subject condition, initially reported to the Commission on September 28, 1982, under the requirements of 10CFR50.55(e).
l During a review of site records it was discovered that inspection records of Nelson Stud installations for cable tray hangers could not l
be located, though a program for inspection had existed.
Further in-l vestigation revealed that base metal defects existed in some imbed I
plates. Visual inspection showed some Nelson Studs did not possess all l
the weld attributes required by the procedure. The base metal defects i
found in the imbed plates were a result of the method used to install i
a template needed to properly align and install the required configur-l ation of Nelson Studs.
i CG&E's Nuclear Engineering and Quality Assurance Departments are presently uriertaking a thorough investigation to determine methods re-quired to confirm the structural adequacy of the installed cable tray supports and provide additional rework or repair, if required.
