STAFF FItiDIt!GS RELATED TO THE PROPOSED IMPORT OF 26 KILOGRAMS URANIUM ENRICHED TO 4.0% FROM JAPAN - ISNM82023 IRT Corporation submitted an application dated October 1,1982 for a license authorizing the in. port of 26 kilograms of uranium enriched to 4.0% U-235, as U02 frr-m A pan.
This r.aterial will be used by 1RT Corporation in the testing of fuel rod scav.er instrumentation being manufactured for Nuclear Fuel I:iustries in ' Span.
It will be pact 6 pd in approved DDT Spec CM centsi;.ers.
Thmends of tons of nomal end slightly enriched urcniu:r. are tri"sp ted within the U.S. annually and this practice has been going on for many ycars aithout a significant incident.
This proposed import represents an extremely small perccniage of the total uranium transported cach year in the U.S. and would not result in any significant change in the probability of a potential accident involving icw enriched uranium.
The prcposed ii. port confoms with the standard provisions that have governed ship.ents of icw-cr,riched uranium for nany years with no significant impact on the environmnt or the general public. Tne staff finds this importation will not be inimical to the cwran defense and security or constitute an ; 3due risk to public heal th, safety, or to the envir;.... erit.
