hDDITIONAL MARK I ISSUES Several issues have recently been identified pertaining to the Mark I Containment design that are not part of the Mark I Long Term Program.
HUMPHREY CONCERNS On May 8, 1982 a number of concerns regarding the adequacy of the General Electric (GE) Mark III Containment design wera raised by a former.GE employee. These concerns were initilly d'irected towards the Mark III Containment design.
Although there was no direct evidence to substantiate the applicability of these concerns:to the Mark I containments the staff has determined that some issues may apply to the Mark I Containment. design. A Letter to the applicant, dated July 8, 1982 requested that these concerns be addressed.
The Mark I Owners Group that includes the applicant responded to those concerns the staff identified as potentially applicable in a letter dated September 30, 1982. The applicant has referenced the Owner Group response on the Fermi 2 docket. The staff intends to review the Owners Group sub-mittal which is applicable to Fermi 2 prior to the Fermi 2 scheduled fuel load date.
VACUUM BREAKER PERFORMANCE DURING P0OL SWELL PHASE OF LOAC The M. ark II Owners Group during a May 20, 1982 meeting identified a problem associated with the performance of the wetwell/drywell vacuum breakers under dynamic loading conditions during the pool swell phase of a LOCA for the Mark II Containments. To assure a similar problem does not exist for the vacuum breakers used in the Mark I containment design the staff requested t'e Mark I Owners Group to provide an evaluation of vacuum breaker actuation during pool swell for the Mark I Containment design. General Electric provided a generic letter report (1) on this subject which the staff intends to review by the end of November 1982.
It is the staff's position that the applicant should commit to the generic resolution of this issue.
