Inspection and Tube Plugging of Indian Point 3 Steam Generator

  1. 33

Dear Mr. Mcdonald:

/

This report is submitted in accordance with the requirements of Technical Specification 4.9.C relating to Steam Generator Tube Plugging.

The Indian Point Unit 3 plant was placed in the cold shutdown condition on December 7, 1978 as a result of a tube leak in Steam Generator 33, a Westinghouse Series 44 Steam Generator. The leak was determined to be a.24 gpm leak.

Subsequent inspection located the leak to be in Row 44, Column 56 at the second support plate in the hot leg side.

An attempt was made to eddy current this leaking tube, however, it would not pass a.540 inch probe which was the minimum size available.

Nominal tube diameter is.770 inches.

Twenty eight tubes surrounding the leaking tube were inspected by the eddy current technique. No additional in. perfections were identified.

Minor denting was indicated, however, all tubes passed a.700 inch probe.

The leaking tube was explosively plugged and a secondary side hydrostatic test was performed to verify the integrity of the plugs.

Very truly yours, 3w -- -
