The GE IF 300 fuel shipping cask to be used to transpan the Shoreham fuel to the Limerick Generating Station arrived at the Shoreham site by barge the morning of August 23. The 70 ton cask, designed to handle highly irradiated spent fuel, and approved on May 11,1993, by the NRC for shipment of the Shoreham fuel, will be used by the licensee to tansfer Shoreham's initial reactor fuel load to the Philadelphia Electric Company's (PECO's) Limerick Station. The fuel was used at Shoreham in a limited testing pmgram at a maximum of 5 9r' power. The shipments,33 total, will involve a combination of heavy haulers, barge transfers, and rail shipments to ship the fuel from the Shoreham Station to a PECO facility located in Eddystone, PA and ultimately to the Limerick Station. Two casks and barges will be used during the shipping campaign, which will end in mid-1994. The IF-300 cask 3;
previously had been approved and used for rail shipments. The shipments of the cask will be the Drst using a barge.
.n A television crew from Channel 12. a local Long Island independent television station, was invited by the licensee to observe the cask this afternoon, after inquiries by the station. The cask currently sits on the barge. A second television station. Channel 10 in Philadelphia, interviewed the Region I Shoreham Project Manager on August 23. regarding the fuel shipping plans.
NRC Region I was previously aware of:he schedule for arrival of the cask at Shoreham and has performed inspections of planning and prepamtion activities at both the Shoreham and Limerick Stations.
