Dear Mr. Martini:

[

On August 24, 1983, there were telephone discussions between your General Sales Manager, R. J. Pabers and representatives of my staff (A. W. Dromerick and W. Laudan) regarding the crankshaft failure at one of the Shoreham diesel-cenerator units, and indication of cracks in the crankshafts of the other h o diesel-cenerators at that facility.

As discussed, we a're recuesting that, the following information be provided by' telephone on August 26 with a written #

ccnfirmation by September 1, 1983.

l 1

1.

A list of nuclear sites that have been supplied Transamerica Delaval or lI Delaval diesel generators.

2.

Ir.dicate which of the diesel generators listed in Item I have crankshafts that are identical or similar to the ones at the Shoreham plant.

3.7 For crankshafts that are similar but not identical to those of the Shoreham diesel-generators, please describe the significant differences between the crankshafts.

Also, provide any information that would indicate whether crankshaft problems encountered at Shoreham are unique to those diesel-generators or may also occur at other diesel-generators you have supplied.

Also, I wish to advise you that we consider that 10 CFR Part 21 requires you to evaluate the problems encountered at Shoreham and report the findings to the NRC so that tho,se licensees which are potentially affected may be notified.

Sincerely,
