SUBJECT:

MEETING 0F DATA RELEASE PANEL OF MATERIALS REVIEW BOARD, JUNE 13, 1983 l

L On the above date, I attended a one-day meeting of the Data Release Panel

[

'of the' Materials Review Board in Chicago, Illinois.

The purpose of the meeting was to review the first data package prepared by the Materials l

Characterization Center for inclusion in the DOE Materials Handbook.

The data package was for leaching of PNL.76-68 borosilicate glass for temperatures up to 90*C and for leach times up to one year.

A list of-attendees at the meeting is enclosed.

There was extensive discussion of the format for presentation of the data l

and numerous suggestions were made to improve the clarity of the presentation of the information.

An important point was that the tests were run while the MCC-1 static leach test-was still evolving,'so that i

the data were not obtained under the test procedure as it now exists.

A i

further. important point is that' the MCC-1 test itself is recognized to have several limitations and there are unresolved questions about the applicability of the data to repository conditions.

The position I took l-with regard to the data was that NRC would not object.to any reasonable format for presentation so long as the uses and limitations of the test.

1 l

method and any deviations from the test procedure were clearly identified

[

so that the user or reviewer could see whether the data were being i

properly applied.

I

[

It'was agreed that the MCC should revise the data package to take into account the comments of the Panel and that it would be submitted to the i.
