ILLINOIS ALASKA OKLAHOMA NORTH CAROLINA TEXAS WYOMING NEW MEXICO MISSISSIPPI OHIO UTAH INDIANA WEST VIRGINIA 4

PENNSYLVANIA MONTANA OREGON ARIZONA MICHIGAN CALIFORNIA The NRC is in the process of amending 10 CFR Parts 30 and 70 to add certain reporting requirements regarding abandoned well-logging sources.

Reports will be required'to be submitted to the NRC and to the State agency that has authority over the particular well drilling operations.

The reporting requirements will be equivalent to W 501(c) of Part W of the Suggested State Regulations.

- The NRC staff believes tha't an important safety factor assoc.iated with

, abandoned well logging sources is a notation of that incident in the records of the appropriate State Oil and Gas regulatory agency.

At a later date, if a particular well is re-entered, this notation will alert the operator to the existence of the abandoned source.

The NRC has completed a survey of its records and has made a listing of the incidents know to the Commission (copy enclosed).

A This is to request that you or the appropriate State agency to do a records check to verify that a notation has been made for those wells i

known to contain abandoned well-logging sources. Use of a format such as that enclosed will be helpful for this response.

We would appreciate a response by March 31, 1983.

Your assistance in this effort will be greatly appreciated.
