Dear Mr. Secretary:
Thank you for your lette of June 9 transmitting a copy of a recent Department of Energy report on the electric power industry in America.
The report raises a number of interesting and important issues concern-ing the future demand and supply of electricity and the financial and regulatory problems associated with assuring reliable electric service.
In fulfilling its statutory responsibilities to assure the safety of nuclear facilities, the Commission is mindful of the need to maintain edequate electricity supplies.
In the past several years we have Jken steps to assure that our licensing activities will be timely and have minimal impact on utility construction schedules.
Should you decide to take any further steps to address the issues facing the electric industry, we would certainly be pleased to comment on any forthcoming recommendations that you might develop involving the regula-tion of nuclear power.
