Endurance Tests of the Emergency Feedwater Pt J W ~

REFERENCE:

Safety Evaluation Report Section 10.4.9.3

Dear Mr. Collins:

Section 10.4.9.3(2) of the Safety Evaluation Report states that, "In FSAR Table 10.4.9A-2, the applicant committed to perform a 48-hr endurance test on all EFWS pumps during preoperational testing. The applicant also committed to provide a copy of test results including:

(a) A brief description of the test method and instrumentation used, (b) A plot of bearing and bearing oil temperatures vs time to demonstrate that the temperature design limits were not exceeded, (c) A plot of pump room ambient temperature and humidity vs time to demonstrate that the pump room ambient conditions do not exceed environmental qualification limits for safety-related equipment in the room, and (d) A statement confirming that the pump vibration limits were not exceeded."

In accordance with this commitment Louisiana Power & Light Co. conducted endurance runs of 48-hr duration for each of the threb Emergency Feedwater Pumps (2 motor driven and 1 turbine driven) during preoperational testing to confirm that the pumps were capable of operation within design limits.

Test Method The Emergency Feedwater pumps were tested in accordance with preoperational test procedure SP0-73-001, " Emergency Feedwater". The pumps were operated for at least 48 hours5.555556e-4 days <br />0.0133 hours <br />7.936508e-5 weeks <br />1.8264e-5 months <br /> with minimum flow in the recirculation mode. The pumps were aligned so that suction was taken from the Condensate Storage Pool (CSP) and pump discharge was recirculated back to the CSP. Minimum flow operation was used because it is the most rigorous mode of operation for the pumps.

Parameters measured during the tests included: pump discharge pressure, recirculation flow rate, pump, motor, and turbine bearing temperatures, pump room temperature and' humidity, pump vibration limits, motor winding temperature, and motor current. Hourly readings were taken and are tabulated on the attachments along with reference to the. instruments used to obtain the data. Where practicable permanent plant instrumentation was used to monitor pump performance and for collecting data. Permanent plant insrumentation was used to monitor pump discharge pressure,. recirculation flow, bearing temperatures, motor winding temperature, motor running current, and steam pressure of the turbine. It should be.noted that bearing oil temperature is not an instrumented parameter on the Waterford 3 Emergency Feedwater Pumps. Bearing temperatures are monitored by permanently installed thermocouples in direct contact with the bearing metal on each pump / motor inboard and outboard bearings. The actual EFWS pump A recirculation flow was. greater than that indicated on the attachement due to a problem with the orifice flange for DPIS-FW-8320AS. This problem was corrected after completion of the endurance run and had no effect on the results since the objective of the test was to monitor bearing temperatures and pump vibrations.

Conclusion As shown on the attachments the 48-hr endurance runs were completed satisfactorily for all three Emergency Feedwater Pumps and bearing temperatures, pump vibrations, and room temperature / humidity conditions measured during the testing were well within the design limits which are as follows:

Motor / Turbine Bearings - 194*F Motor Stator - 266*F Pump Bearings - 200*F Vibrations - 0.314 in/see Room Temperature - 104*F (motor driven pump rooms) 150*F (turbine driven pump room)

Relative Humidity - 90%
