DN Y Craig Faust - April 21 NRC I&E Interview b
1 FAUST:
Something else I would like to just emphasize is that just prior to stopping those pumps, we did reinitiate, we hit high pressure injection just prior to stopping the pumps.
I don't know if that was brought up before, it 1
should be though.
We got the decision, in other words, we made the decision and I'm not sure how you can look at that.
HUNTER:
Okay.
And one point you pointed out and I under-stand.
. and we'll still talk about, I want to go back before you stopped the pump.
You indicated that you had manually initiated ESF safety injection, and at that time j
that would put the two high pressure injection pumps on?
FAUST:
Right.
HUNTER:
At maximum flow?
FAUST:
Right.
Well, the sixteens would travel open till a preset at 240, approximate total 250 gpm in each loop.
In other words, I'm saying it would be actually putting in a q
l 1,000 gpm.
That's what they're set up to do, 250 per loop off the pumps.
HUNTER:
And what was the reasoning behind initiating SI?
FAUST:
You're taking off your n.ain coolant flow path, now, so our trend of thought was, at least mine was, you want water going in there.
You're trying to establish natural I
circulation, but to me we were also under situations that didn't really indicate that, to me, that we were gonna make it because we started to cavitate our pumps.
Its a lot of - the indication to me was a lot of voids, whatever you want to call'it, voiding out in the loops.
So we --
I'm not sure which -- it seemed like, try.
We were trying to establish circulation.
We had flow before we stopped it, so to us it wasn't inconveivable anyway.
HUNTER:
Who initiated the ESF?
FAUST:
Ed Fredrick.
