Reference:

(a) License No. DPR-36 (Docket No. 50-309)

(b) UNSRC Letter to MYAPCo dated March 24, 1981

Subject:

Shortnase Sturgeon Capture

Dear Sir:

In Reference (b), the staff requested to be notified both by telephone and by letter if another shortnose sturgeon were taken.

On June 1, 1983 a shortnose sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum Lesueur) was found alive in the catch bag at the entrance to the intake structure. The specimen was 48.5 cm long and weighed 510 gms.

The sturgeon appeared to be in good condition with no lacerations or contusions.

It was transported to a point several hundred yards from the intake where it was released.

The Maine Department of Marine Resources was contacted at 8:45 a.m. and the National Marine Fisheries Service at 10:00 a.m. the same day. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission was also notified.

The shortnose sturgeon, although on a federal list of endangered species, is quite plentiful in the Kennebec River. The National Marine Fisheries Service is currently taking steps to remove the shortnose sturgeon from the list of endangered species for the State of Maine.
