20555 Attention: Mr. S. A. Varga Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant - Units 1 and 2 Reactor Trip Breakers: DS-416 Emergency Operating Procedures Gentlemen:
In response to the NPC Staff's regtest for changes to the Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs) for reactor trip and anticipated transient without trip, Alabama Power Company submits the following information:
1.
Tne E0P for reactor. trip will be modified to define reactor trip procedure entry (i.e., reactor trip symptoms) when instrumentation indicates:
a.
A reactor trip condition on the First-Out Annunciator panel I
or 1
b.
Trip Status Light Box bistables meeting the required coincidence for a reactor trip g i
c.
Parameter Indicators having reached a reactor trip set poi.nt.
2.
The Immediate Operator Actions section of reactor trip E0P will require the following:
- a. The operator would verify whether the reactor is tripped by l.
observing that all full length rods are fully inserted and whether nuclear power is decreasing.
i
- b. If the reactor has not tripped, the operator will be instructed to positively confirm that a reactor trip condition exists by observing the Trip Status Light Box bistables meeting the required coincidence for a reactor trip or Parameter Indicators indicating a reactor trip.

- c. If a valid reactor trip condition exists and the reactor is not tripped, the operator would then be required to manually trip the reactor.
A draft to the reactor trip E0P will be completed within two weeks and submitted for NRC review. Upon concurrence, the procedure will be formally issued after appropriate operator training is conducted.
In addition, the ATWT E0P will be correspondingly changed as a result of the staff's redefinition of procedural coverage of an ATWT condition with the resultant shifting of procedure steps from the ATWT E0P to the reactor trip E0P.
