SUBJECT:

SUptiARY OF JULY 6,1983 EETING ACRS (10)

SEPB On July 6,1983, we met with representatives of Consumers Pour Company (CPC) in our Bethesda offices to discuss the thermal / structural analysis of the Big Rock Point spent fuel pool. Representatives from NUS Corporation, a censultant to CPC, and Isham, Lincoln, and Beale, a law fim engaged by CPC, were also present. A list of people in attendance at this meeting is enclosed.

NUS explained how the structural analyses of the pool under thermal loads will be modified to address the two concerns previously raised by the staff:

1) handling of orthotropic plate conditions in ANSYS computer code.
2) use of temperature steps in the ANSYS step-by-step analyses instead of time steps.

We indicated that the modifications as explained are reasonable and will satisfy the two stated concerns if the results of the re-analyses are within the proper bounds.

We asked NUS about the effects of differential expansion of the pool walls and liner on the analysis. NUS indicated that the effects are insignificant; however, NUS committed to provide further justification to substantiate this claim. We also pointed out that other issues which we previously discussed with NUS and CPC, such as deflections, may need to be reconsidered if the results change significantly due to the re-analysis.

NUS expects to complete the rs-analyses in late July.
