The Commission discussed the additional resources the agency needs to fulfill the requirements of the Nuclear Maste Policy Act.

The Commission by a vote of 4-0 (Commissioner Gilinsky abstaining) approved the staff estimate of the additional resources needed.

The Commission noted that 1.

the resources are to be used only for the purposes

indicated in the staff's justification and 2.

of the total amount of additional resources approximately

  • 46 percent is needed for new work required by the NWPA 22 percent is needed if the'NRC's schedule is to match schedule changes made by DOE 32 percent is for waste management work that had been foreseen, but for which the required resources were underestimated in our previous budget requests.

The Commission also agreed to proceed with the pending letter to OMB,on the subject of MWPA resource needs.
