(c):

8. Rybak letter to J. G. Keppler dated February 14, 1983.

Dear Mr. Keppler:

.The referenced letters discussed resolution of an open item concerning multiplet analysis capability of our Automated Analytical Instrumentation System (AAIS) to which we committed to review our software system.

A task force was formed to resolve this issue and considerable man-hours have been spent to date.

At this time, however, it is apparent that we cannot provide the entire schedule.

The purpose of this letter is to summarize a revised schedule.

New procedures are currently being developed and tested for all-of the following areas:

1.

Resolution of multiplet peaks.

2.

Calculation of uncertainties (error analysis).

3.

Compensation for nuclear radiation background.

4.

Calculation of the lower limit of detectability (LLD).

5.

Re-evaluation of peak classification algorithms.

6.

Re-evaluation of ef ficiency determination algorithms.

June 13, 1983 LThe~ choices of' optimal' solutions for the.above.six areas have

. proven mors..chs11enging1than originally anticipated.. Rather than delay all the entire improvement' efforts, we are proposing 1the following task definitions.. We believe the proposed schedule will provide partial results as soon as possible.

TaskL1:

Multiplet Resolution.and Peak Classification

A detailed schedule for completion of necessary software modifications will be completed by August 31, 1983.

Task 2:. Efficiency Calibration with Associated Uncertainties A detailed schedule for completion of necessary software-modifications will be completed by December 31, 1983.

Task 3:

Lower Limit of Detectability and Uncertainties Related to Activity Determination-

A detailed schedule for 'the completion of necessary software

_ modifications will be submitted by June 1, 1984.

Task 4: ' Background Compensation A detailed schedule for the completion of necessary software modifications will be submitted by June 1, 1984.

.Please contact this office if you have any questions regarding this matter.

Very truly yours,
