Subject:

Report of Potential 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Loose Pole Piece Wedges on Four (4) Emergency Diesel Generators (#94)

Dear Mr. Keppler:

On April 29, 1983, Detroit Edison's Mr. W. E. Miller, Jr., Supervisor-Construction Quality Assurance telephoned Mr. D. W. Hayes of NRC Region III to report on a potential problem with loose pole piece wedges on four (4) Emergeticy Diesel Generators.

An investigation into a vibration problem on emergency diesel gener-ators revealed that wedges serving the pole pieces on four (4) of the emergency diesel generators were loose.

Detroit Edison has requested that the manufacturer (Beloit Power Systems) review and evaluate the circumstances to determine the cause and establish corrective action for this deficiency. The manufacturer has also been asked to provide a detailed written procedure to secure both the wedges and pole pieces so that they will remain secure in future service. In addition, the manufacturer shall provide Detroit Edison with a written inspection procedure, including a list of tools and equipment required to allow future field inspection of these wedges to ensure tightness.

Another report on this item, either interim or final, will be sent when further information is available.

If you have questions con-cerning this matter, please contact Mr. G. M. Trahey, Assistant Director - Project Quality Assurance.
