NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION 3
.g WASHmGTON, D. C. 20555 e
e May 9, 1983 CHAIRMAN Mr. Al Amorosi Advisor to Division of International Energy Development Programs Argonne National Laboratory South Case Avenue Argonne, Illinois 60439 Dear M I am writing in response to your letters of March 24 and April 11, 1983 concerning the next generation of light water reactors. With your con-currence, I have made your March 24, 1983 letter available to the other Commissioners.
The subject of your letters is certainly an important topic and I agree with your statement that it is "... desirable for NRC and the nuclear industry to work together in defining the safety criteria for, and eval-uating the safety improvements on, the next plants."
In fact, as you
-noted in your April 11, 1983 letter, the NRC has an on-going program of this nature with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).
This pro-gram was initiated by EPRI and is referred to as the EPRI Standardized Plant Program. The NRC staff is currently assisting in this program in identifying unresolved generic safety issues which impact the design of a plant and could, therefore, affect the cost and construction time.
Because of the close parallels between your ideas and the EPRI Standard-ization Plant Program, I encourage you to contact Mr. Frank J. Miraglia, Assistant Director for Safety Assessment, NRR, at (301) 492-7492, to dis-cuss the details of the NRC staff's efforts in the EPRI program. Mr. Miraglia should be able to answer any questions you might have in this area.
Sincerely, Nunzio J. Palladino MGpy(fas IIeen Sent to PDR
