.ra.Ca v.cc rac.ior~r NUCLEAR OPERATIONS Docket No. 50-358 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137 Attention:

Mr. J.G.

Keppler Regional Administrator Gentlemen:

RE:

WM. H.

ZIMMER NUCLEAR POWER STATION - UNIT 1 10CFR50. 55 (e), ITEM M SEISMIC QUALIFICATION OF THIRTEEN ESSENTIAL DAMPER OPERATOR MOUNTING BRACKETS W.O.

57300, JOB E-5590, FILE NO. 956C, M-24 This letter constitutes an interim report concerning the subject condition initially reported to the Commirsion on October 14, 1980 as a reportable deficiency under the requ.rements of 10CFR50.5 5 (e).

Sargent & Lundy Engineers (S&L) has approved the American Warming and Ventilating Company (AWV) reports covering the analysis to substantiate the design modifications to the mounting brackets for eleven (11) of the thirteen (13) damper assemblies.

AWV has been asked to reanalyze the remaining two (2) assemblies.

It is anticipated that AWV will submit their reanalysis by June 17, 1983.

These analyses and modifications would enable the assemblies to accommodate the seismic loading known at the time for the Purchase Specification.

Additional analysis and modifications will be required to accommodate MK II Containment dynamic loading cases which were identified after the Purchase Order was issued to AWV.

S&L has completed an evaluation of the subject dampers using the revised MK II Containment dynamic loadings and has found that nine (9) of the thirteen (13) dampers would be overstressed even with AWV proposed modifications.

Additional modifications will be implemented to assure the assemblies will accommodate both the original seismic requirement and the MK II Containment loadings.

The remaining four dampers will withstand both the original seismic and the additional MK II dynamic loadings after AWV modifications have been completed.
