Discussion The infornation requested in our February 24,1983' letter was discussed in detail and clarification provided as required. No additional information was requested. The NRC staff notes that the proposed impact limiters -
may have to be redesigned to reduce the y force experienced by the package. Also, it will be difficult to show the containment vessel will not buckle during fabrication or lead contraction at the -40*F and -20*F ambient temperature extrenes for the normal and accident conditions of transport. Stress allowables stated in Regulatory Guide 7.6 are not applicable to buckled shells.
DOE (Sandia)discussedthepossibilityofrespondingtoourrequestin September 1983. The additional information would be reviewed by the staff in two or three months.
