Dear Mr. Tuite:

This is in response to your submittal of a Tcpical Report on the RADMAN computer code to classify and document packaged low-level waste in accordance with 10 CFR Part 61 regulations. This Topical Report was sent to us via cover letter dated' November 11, 1982, and was later supplemented with further information. This information consisted of a draft users manual for the code, some revised code listings, and an example sheet containing microscopic cross sections for shielding calculations for various waste types.

In general, we have found the Topical Report to be well written, and belie.ve that the RACMAN program shows promise as a valid tool for waste generators to use as part of their compliance with the Part 61 requirements. We have, however, a few comments and questions on the Topical Report which are included as attachment 1 to this letter.

Questions and comments from South Carolina, Washington, and Nevada are included as attachment 2.

We have previously discussed with you our forwarding of these questions and comments. You indicat.ed that in responding to these questions and comments, you planned to resubmit the Topical Report in it's entirety rather than providing a sheet of replacement pages. This approach is acceptable. We request, however, that you include a cover letter or equivalent that provides a brief cross-reference between the questions and comments and the revised Topical Report.

m@

Sincerely, Original Signe d By to G.W. Roles Sw Low-Level Waste Licensing Branch
