Dear Mr. Sjoblom:
This letter is in response to your October 22, 1982 request for comments on the second draf t of the report entitled " Potential Health and Environmental Hazards of Uranium Mine Wastes". The essential nature of the report does not differ significantly from the previous draft which we commented on in 1979. We note that some changes have been made in response to our comments on the previous draft, however, the principle thrust of our comments is still applicable. Given the purpose of the report, it appears that it would be appropriate for it to include a complete discussion of the existing regulatory authorities and environmental controls over mine wastes, and recommend alternatives where regulatory gaps are identified or where the present standards are considered to be inadequate.
l We appreciate the opportunity to review the draft report and hope the comment provided above is helpful.
Sincerely, Original Signed by Robert E. Browning c4DJohn B. Martin, Director
