Dear Ms. Galef and Mr. Harckham:
On behalf of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am responding to your letter of December 13, 2019, to Chairman Svinicki requesting a meeting between the NRC and local elected leaders.
The NRC shares your desire to maintain open communications as Indian Point approaches permanent cessation of operations and transitions to decommissioning. As you acknowledged in your letter, the NRC holds annual meetings to discuss plant performance at Indian Point and other areas of interest within the NRCs purview. The NRC fully intends to hold a public annual assessment meeting in spring 2020 and will be prepared to discuss and answer questions on the license transfer process and reactor decommissioning. As we have done in years past, the NRC also plans to hold a separate meeting with elected officials before the public meeting.
Note that while the NRC will be prepared to discuss the review process at these meetings, we will be unable to discuss specific details of the Indian Point license transfer application while it is under NRC review.
