U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ht;-ft/fL/ IV (%, l Washingtan, D.C. 20555 Dea'r Mr. Taylor: l We are requesting the Nuclear Regulatory Commission not to ~ permit the Baltimore Gas and Electric Companyto store spent nuclear fuel in the above-ground storage facility at the Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant. We feel many hazards already exist in our small county as a result of utility companies' desire to make huge profits at the expense of the residents' health and safety. The n uclear plant with its history of problems is a constant threat. The Columbia Gas plant 3 located a few miles from the nuclear plant, will resume operation very soon and will be sending gas through our county by means of a large underground pipeline. We are all aware of the threat of a gas explosion near the nuclear plant. If BG&E could convert to a gas fueled plant, the problems' involved in nuclear plant operation and the storage of spent fuel would not exist. Changing to a gas fueled plant would not cause BG&E to go out of b'usiness or cause the employees to lose jobs. Our small county is no longer rural. More and more subdivisions are being built and the population is increasing with the need for j more schools. Several schools are located a few miles from the l nuclear plant. Our highways are busy in normal times. In case of l an emergency such as a nuclear accident, evacuation of all residents would be very slow and very dangerous. We support the request made by the Maryland Safe Energy Coalition to halt the plan'to store spent nuclear fuel in the above-ground facility at the nuclear plant and to open nearingsfor further in-formation on the dangers of above-ground storage of spent nuclear fuel at the Calvert Cliffs plant. We will appreciate your consideration in our request and your l concern for our health and safety. Sincerely yours, n gA_ [ A t j 050018 U MRS. EVELYN E. PARDOE 3515 BROOMES ISiAND RD. PORT REPUBLIC.
