Special Report on Partial Inoperability of the CARD 0X Fire Suppression System Centlemen:
As required by Technical Specification 3.23.C.2, Maine Yankee is reporting partial inoperability of the Cardox Fire Suppression System. A portion of the system will be inoperable for approximately 36 days due to planned modifications to the containment electrical penetrations and the Cardox System duritig the 1990 refueling outage.
The portion of the Cardox System (Zone 4) that covers the Reactor MCC Rooms and Electrical Penetration Rooms outside containment will be shut off from about A)ril 3, 1990 until about May 1, 1990. The portion of the Cardox System (Zone 5 t1st covers the Electrical Penetration Rooms inside containment will-be shut off) after the plant is in cold shutdown for refueling, about April 9,1990 and returned to service about May 1, 1990. The Cardox System is being shut off because of work on the system and to protect personnel working in the area while the spiral stairs which provide access and egress are removed.
The stairs are being removed to permit transportation of the new penetration assemblies to the Electrical Penetration Rooms. The portion of the Cardox System outside containment (Zone 4)he system.will be tagged out of operation. No work will be performed on this portion of t The portion of the Cardox System for the inside containment Electrical Penetration Rooms (Zone 5) will be tagged out and modified to allow containment leak testing. This portion of the system will be functionally tested prior to returning the system to operation.
t,oring the period that the system will be inoperable, Maine Yankee will establish a fire watch and provide backup fire suppression equipment (portable fire extinguishers) as required by Technical Specification 3.23.C.I.
