P Review and update of the basic training requirements for low-level waste

-inspectors was accomplished as noted in the IMNS January 10, 1990, revision to i
Inspection MaNa1 Chapter 1245. This has been accomplished through revision of the Transportation of Radioactive Materials Course (H.308). This course j
includes a day long session on Low. Level Waste Generator Requirenants for 10 CFR Part C1.
In addition, each year we review and update the training of l
low-level waste inspectors'through modifications'to the Radioactive L terials Course and corresponding notebook. The course notebook also provides

information on inspection procedures and techniques which is updated and presented by a senior inspector from one of the regional offices.
During the National Program Review we examine the Region's training' program,:
review the training needs of each low level waste inspector, and make i
' recommendations on future training needs of inspectors. Training needs are t
m also discussed with the individual inspectors. We agree with'the IMNS reconmendation:that the' Inspection Manual Chapter sumary abstracts should be 1
modified to provide more specific instructions for the Regions' on how they are i
to train or inform their inspectors about changes.to the inspection manuals, p
We are in the process of developing an inspection module for the inspection of L
low.lsvel waste disposal facilities and in addition. are working with NRR to revise the inspection modules currently used in the reactor Core Inspection i
L Program. We w1 M be coordinating this effort with the Regions, the sited i
L states and IMNS. When the new inspection module for LLW disposal facilities is completed, we will examine training needs in this area.
