MEMORANDUM TO: File FROM D.
Skov DATE:
November 21, 1989
SUBJECT:
New Application from The Aerospace Corporation [
In an application dated September 21, 1989, The Aerospace Corporation, Los Angeles,. California, requested a new license to i
authorize-use of_several foil sources, each containing 8 mil 11 curies of nickel-63.
The foil sources were to be used in
[
Varian Model 3400 gas chromatographs.
A fee was collected by LFMB, and the application (Control No. 71052) was processed for possiblecissuance of a specific license (Docket No. 030-31332).
When.the license reviewer telephoned Mr. Frank D. Riggs on November 20-21, 1989, it was learned that the detector cell assembly to be used in the Varian Model 3400 gas chromatographs was Detector Kit Model No. 02-001972-00.
According to Sealed i
Source Device and Registry Sheet No. CA662D101B, this Detector.
Kit is a generally licensed device.
Mr. Riggs said that he had
~ }.
subsequently confirmed the general license' requirement when he i
contacted the Radiation Safety Officer at Varian Instrument Division, Walnut Creek, California.
q On the basis of the above information, the detector cells do not
' 'k I
require a specific license, and the application will need to be d
l voided.

,e The Aerospace Corporation Amendment to Application for Material License 9.
FACILITIES AND EQUIIHENI'. One or two Varian gas chromatographs are installed in a truck and one or two gas chromatographs may be placed in a trailer as is dictated by how to best accomplish the mission. Each unit (truck or trailer) is an independent air sampling laboratory used for gas sampling under Air Force contracts.-
One example of use would be to place a unit down vind from
- a. rocket motor test firing to obtain information as to hazardous components in the gas plume. The truck and trailer are locked when not attended and are l
normally stored or located on the Los Angeles Air Force Base adjacent to supporting Aerospace laboratories. Shipping papers vill be in the cab of the truck for the radioactive m"terial in compliance with Department of Transportation regulations.
Both the gas chromatographs and the detectors have the required radioactive material labels.
Plans and photograph are attached to the original application.
