The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Consnission (NRC) strongly supports inoustry initiatives to improve maintenance and NUMARC's efforts to coordinate these programs, The staff will ccntinue to work with you regarding the document for the industry maintenance program being developed by the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO).

This docunent should edoress the essential elenents of an 1

effective snaintenance program.

The industry actions discussed in the action plan and the progress regarding i

the industry maintenance program document will be considered in the staf f's deliberations and recor*>endations to the Consnission regarding the necessity of a maintenance rule.
