Docket No. 50-395 MEMORANDUM FOR: Albert Gibson, Director Division of Reactor Safety RII FROM:

Gus C. Lainas Assistant Director for Region II P4 actors Division of Reactor Projects - I/II, t*R

SUBJECT:

TI A. V. C. SU)HER NUCLEAR STATION - RESOLUTION OF j.

STEAM GENERATOR INTEGRITY (TAC 72702)

My April 6,1989 memorandum to you presented our interface agreenent relative to the evaluation of the resin intrustion of February V. C. Sumner Nuclear Station, Unit N3.1, (Summer Station 14,)1989 at the and subsequent operation following ascension above 5% power on February 19, 1989 with tie secondary chemistry continually outside the EPRI guidelines until March 10, 1989.

All of the actions associated with this TIA have been conpleted for sone time and this menorandum is to dousment the closeout of this TIA.

NRR has reviewed the actions proposed by the licensee and has concluded that the integrity of the steam generator would be maintained during the remainder of the Suniner Station operating gych.

A Safety Evaluation concluding this was issued by the Division of Engineering on April 6,1989 and is attached to this menorandum.

A Meeting Sumary of the March 22, 1989 neeting was issued on April 4,1989.

Following the neeting, it was determined by NRR and by Region II represenatives that no chemist would be sent to the Sunener Station for an inspection.

In addition, Regional representatives and NRR representatives concluded that the approach talen by the licensee was sufficient to conclude i

that a steam generator tube failure was unlikely during the remainder of the curient cycle.

A Safety Evaluation would not be required.
