SUBJECT:
PILGRIM STATUS REPORT FOR THE PERIOD JANUARY 6 -
FEBRUARY 5, 1990 Enclosed is the Pilgrim status repart from the NRC Resident Office at Pilgrim.
'The NRC Restart Staff is in place and was on-site monitoring licensee activi-ties on an extended shift basis during the report period.
The first Pilgrim status report was issued beginning with the week of June 10, 1986 in response to the public and media interest regarding the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station and the need expressed by local officials to better. understand what activities were taking place. The reports provided NRC management'and the public with highlights of plant activities and NRC inspection activities at the Pilgrim. Station. Subsequent inspection reports addressed many of the topics in
.more detail.
It is presently our intent that the next status report, to be issued about March 5, 1990, will be the last such report to be issued for Pilgrim Station.
Information normally covered in the status report will be documented in routine NRC inspection reports.

i ENCLOSURE h;
PILGRIM STATUS REPORT FOR THE PERIOD JANUARY 6 - FEBRUARY 5,1990 1.0 Plant Status As of. 8:00 a.m. on February 5,1990, the reactor was operating at full power with the turbine generator synchronized to the grid.
2.0 Facility Operations Summaty During this-report period, the plant was operated at full power.
3.0 Items'of Special Interest i
Brittle Fracture of Salt Service Water Pump Column On January 11, 1990 while transporting the assembled "A" Salt Service Water (SSW) pump (without motor) from the maintenance shop to the intake structure, the impeller end of the pump was dropped approximately six to twelve inches onto the concrete surface. The impact of the drop caused a 360 degree through-wall fracturg of one of the five column sections.
In-itial visual examination and subsequent metallurgical examinations con-cluded the fracture was brittle in nature. Testing of other column sec-tions has not revealed any other areas with degraded material.
I' The SSW system at Pilgrim provides water from the ocean to cool plant safety-related components via heat exchangers; The system is configured with-five pumps, two per division and one swing pump that can be aligned to either division should a pump become inoperable.
Licensee operability analysis to date has shown that the SSW pumps are operable; however, lic-ensee evaluation on the SSW system is ongoing.
Specialists from NRC Region I, the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR) and the resident t
inspectors are following licensee activities.
Detailed review of this event will-be included in Inspection-Report 50-293/90-05.
Senior Reactor Operator Licensing Examinatiors I
During the week of January 29, 1990, NRC Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) licensing exams were administered. The process involves the administra-tion of NRC prepared operating and written examinations for those indivi-duals requesting a Senior Reactor Operator licensee from the NRC.
The results of this examination will be documented in Inspection Report 50-293/90-04.
4.0 Pilgrim Restart Staff Activities The Pilgrim Restart Staff was in extended shift coverage throughout this report period.
