Funding for Conversion of HEU to LEU
Dear Sir:
Pursuant to the rulanaking on the HEU to LEU fuel conversion for non-power reactors, General Atomics (GA) recently made inquiry to the Department of Energy (DOE) Division of University and Industry Programs concerning the availability of DOE funding for the replacement of. CA's TRIGA FLIP' fuel.
Mr. Richard E. Stephens has replied that the current DOE plans include funding for conversion of-university-craned reactors only (copy of DOE reply attached).
-Since no funding is available for the conversion of GA's TRIGA FLIP
~ fuel, we have no plans to proceed with the conversion in fiscal year 1990.
very truly yours, Keith E. Asmussen, Manager Licensing, Safety and Nuclear Cmpliance KEA/shs 340.6

Dear Mr. Asmussen:
In reference to'your letter of January 24, 1990, please be advised that the Department of Energy's (00E) budget for FY 1990 and FY 1991 does not include any funds to support the conversion of the TRIGA Mark F Reactor to low enriched uranium.
Our first priority is to complete the conversion of university-based nuclear research reactors subject to the NRC rule with funds available to the Department.
Sincerely, l
Richard E. Stephens, Director Division of University and l-Industry Programs Office of Energy Research L
