U. S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY C0P9 TIS $10N I
L Most of the agency's computing needs continue to be met under agreements with other government agencies, by comercial timesharing and by distributed word processing equipment, terminals, microcomputers and minicomputers throughout t
the agency.
Appropriate telecommunications links, mostly provided by leasing comunercial lines, provide access to information.
The majority of government for scientific timesharingcomputing service is provided by the Idaho Nat E
Computer Center, for inform, ation systems timesharing.and by the Nation In the area of equipment, the agency currently maintains 20 shared.?ogic central word processing systems distributed among seven different sites, together with a number of system-specific minicomputers and three general use rinicomputers.
Beginning in late FY 1990, the agency will replace its agin word processing systems with a network of microcomputers and file servers. g The agency plans to incorporate its existing, stand-alone, microcomputers into this network beginning in FY 1991.
By the end of fiscal year 1989, the agency had purchased and installed over 1,700 stand-alone microcomputers, together with associated comercial-package software, for administrative and i
scientific purposes.
Significant attention will continue to be applied in FY 1990 through FY 1992 i
toward the headquarters building consolidation.
Occupancy is currently projected for 1993.
In. addition to consnunications networking, this will l
fnvolve the acquisition of a digital comununications switch for dedicated use l
by the NRC Operations Center.
.n addition to use of the Washington Interagency Telecommunications System (WITS) and FTS-2000, lease of commercial l-long-distance and local transmission capabilities for voice and data telecomununications by headquarters will continue in
" foreign exchange" lines for emergency notification.cluding the use of i
L l
In the systems area, comunercial contracts for the maintenance of general ADP l
systems, for data entry and for the operation and maintenance of the Nuclear l
Documents System are exp, ected to continue. Similarly, an interagency agreement will provide for the continued operation and maintenance of the Nuclear Materials Management and Safeguards System.
In addition, a contract l-for the maintenance of the Shared Information Network (SINET) is ongoing.
Development of shared data bases and associated application systems will continue in FY 1990 and beyond.
