SUBJECT:
RESPONSE LETTER BY LICENSEE. BURLEY MEDICAL CENTER LICENSE No. 21--00338-03 The enclosed letter is a response by a licensee to sa apparent item of noncompliance. We feel the comments made by-the licensee justifies year review and consideration.
The specific item of noncompliance was failure to perform monthly spot J
checks on a timely basis as required by 10 CFR 35.22(a). Specifically, spot checks were tac,t performed in March and April of.1981. The licensee stated his dosimetry equipment was being calibrated during that period by a regional calibration laboratory as required by 10 CFR 35.23(a).

Dr. Bank noted that since monthly spot checks of teletherapy machine output are required and that the instrument used for the check routinely required calibration and the calibration usually took 4 to 6 weeks, then it follows that a back-up instrument is needed to meet all conditions.
i He suggest relief from the requirement for monthly spot checks of ta14.-
therapy units when the check instrument is in for calibastion.
