Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Thermal Growth Clearance for CRD Penetrations between Biological Shield and the Primary Containment (#44).

Dear Mr. Keppler:

Tids additional interim report on the Thermal Growth Clearance for CRD Penetrations between Biological Shield and the Primary Containment problem has been prepared to provide you with the current status of this problem.

This item was originally reported to Mr. J. Konklin of NRC Region III by Detroit Edison's Mr. G.J. Carter, QA Engineer-Construction Quality Assurance on May 28, 1981.

At that time, it was determined that there was questionable clearance to cllow for thermal growth of the primary containment vessel with respect to the CRD penetrations in the Biological Shield. Reactor Controls, in empleting in-sta11ation of the CRD lines, noted instances where the specified slope of the CRD lines had been exceeded. Detroit Edison Engineering reviewtxi the design as campared to the installed conditions to verify and determine the extent of the problem. The CRD penetrations are presently being removed for correction of the problem.

Another report on this item, either interim or final, is scheduled to be sent to you on or % fore February 19, 1982. If you have questions concerning this matter, please corRact Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assur-ance.

Very truly yours, i
