Dear Mr. Denton:
Reference (a) requested on an emergency basis a change to the Zion Unit 1 Technical Specifications to permit removal from service and repair of the Unit 2 system auxiliary tranformer (TR 242).
This letter is submitted to request an extention of the provisions of that amendment beyond the seven day period originally requested to October 14, 1981.
This extention is necessary to complete the work required on the transformer.
While no major internal damage was discovered, a number of minor repairs are required to internal transformer connections.
In addition, it is desirable to perform several preventive maintenance items at this time, including a thorough internal cleaning.
Finally, an extensive testing program is planned for the transformer following reassembly, in order to ensure that all problems have been corrected and reassembly has been properly accomplished.
Bocause of the importance of this transformer to plant safety and reliability, sufficient time should be made available to perform the work thoroughly and carefully.
