-554/81-19 The subject deficiencies were initially reported to NRC-0IE, Region II, Inspector P. A. Taylor on August 20, 1981 as PRC 81-23 In compliance with paragraph 50.55(e) of 10 CFR Part 50, we are enclosing the first interim report on the subject deficiency. TVA anticipates trans.uitting the next rcport on or before September 18, 1983 We consider 10 CFR Part 21 applicable to this nonconformance.

10CFR50.55(e) REPORT NO. 1 (INTERIM)

HTBD-50-518/81-25, -519/81-19, -520 /81-21, -521/81-19 PBRD-50-553/81-25, -554/81-19 Descrintion of Deficiency It has been determined that incorrect reactor vessel water level transmitters and trip units have been provided by General Electric Company, San Jose, California, to TVA for use at the Hartsville and Phipps Bend Nuclear Plants. Wide range transmitters have been installed instead of narrow range transmitters, as are required for the design.

Several master trip units are also the wrong instruments.

Corrective Actions Narrow range transmitters are required with compatible trip units. All incorrect transmitters and trip units will be replaced.

TVA will submit an additional report detailing the cause of this deficiency, actions to orevent recurrence, and the date by which corrective actions will be complete.

This report will be filed on or before September 18, 1083 l
