V Subj act: Virgil C. Summer Nuclear St!ati'on Docket No. 50/395 O Substantial Safety Hazard Undersized Socket Welds on Skid Mounts.d Equipment N. E. File 3.1051

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

On August 14, 1981, Mr. Jack Bryant of the NRC Region II Office was notified of a substantial safety hazard involving the socket welded piping of J.' Emergency Feedwater Pumps. Although engineering judgment ind! _ates the under-sized socket welds would be adequate, the vendor cannot substantiate this viewpoint and, therefore, failure of the welds in question has been assumed. Failure of these welds could lead to the failure of the Emergency Feedwater Pumps and ultimately a compromise of the Emergency.Feedwater System.

The corrective action for this problem is to add sufficient weld metal to increase the fillet sizes by rewelding the deficient joints.

It is expected that this ef fort will be complete by November 15, 1981.

Bingham Willamette, the pump manufacturer, has been informed of this deficiency and will be responsible for addressing the specific cause and corrective actions for this problem.

In regard to the Eme:gency Feedwater Pumps, this is a final report.

However, as discussed with Mr. Bryant, the scope of this substantial safety hazard may be expanden as the review of other equipment becomes available.

If you require further information, please advise.

To-7 Very truly yours, lI e

T. C. Nichols, Jr.
