The information is as initially received without verifi-cation or evaluation and is basically all that is known by NRC staff on this dt.te.

Subject:

REACTOR BUILDING BASEMENT / SUMP WATER TRANSFERS At 4:20 p.m. the licensee started to transfer. reactor building (RB) sump / basement water to the Submerged Demineralizer System (SDS) Feed Tanks using a surface suction pump in the RB and the pre-filter and post-filter in the SDS pool (Spent Fuel Pool "B").

This is the first time RB s-mo/ basement water (other than water samples) is to be transferred outside the RB since

' arch 28,1979 accident.

Approximately 15,000 gallons of the 700,000 gallons of water ill be transferred and this represents a continuation of the preoperational testing of the SDS.

Previous testing phases included the use of demineralized water and Reactor Coolant 31eed Tank water (approximately 1 uCi/ml).

Media interest will occur because of this significant event and licensee plans to conduct a press briefing subseque..it to the transfer.

The NRC does not plan to issue a press release at this time.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was informed.

This preliminary notification is issued for information only and the NRC plans to continue monitoring events as they occur.

The NRC TMI Program Office received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Manager, Plant Operations'(TMI-2) at 4:21 PM today and this information was current as of 4:30 PM.
