Dear Mr. Denton:
ULNRC-504 DOCKET NUMBEFS 50-483 AND 50-486 CALLAWAY '!LANT, UNITS 1 & 2 FINAL SAFEfY ANALYSIS REPORT In response to an NRC staff request concernins inplant iodine instrumentation under accident conditions, the following dec ribes our method of iodine analysis.
During accident conditions, charcoal cartridges removed from air samplers will be taken to the Hat Lab and purged with air or nitrogen to remove noble gases.
Purging will be done under an appropriate ventilation hood.
Cartridges will then be taken to the Counting Room for isotopic analysis using a HPGe detector, MCA and process computer to accurately determine the radiciodine concentrations.
If, due to the accident conditions, the normal counting room is unavailable or unaccessible, an alternative counting room in the EOF providing a background low enough to determine radiciodine concentrations in a reasonable period of time will be used.
Depending upon the conditions at the time of sampling, the sample media may be charcoal or silver zeolite cartt?'Jes, or charcoal or silver zeolite--impregnated filter paper.
The appropriate sample media will be determined on the bacis of the l
sampling environment, and the efficiency of the media for collection of radiohalogens, particulates and noble gases.
Procedures will be developed based on specific equipment types / brands purchased by Union Electric.
A training program will be developed and include the review of procedures and demonstration of methods by personnel responsible for air sample collection, preparation and counting / analysis to assure proficiency in determining radioiodine concentrations during accident and post-accident conditions.
This information is hereby incorporated into the Callaway Application.
