Subject:

Final Report of 10CFR50.55(c) Item on spacing of Concrete -

Anchors (#42) .

Dear Mr. Keppler:

This is Detroit Edison's final report on the Spacing of Concrete Anchors.

The problem was orginally reported to Mr. G. Fiore111 of NRC-Region III by Detroit Edison's Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assurance, on March 26, 1981.

These anchors are used to support pipe, cable trays, air conditioning ducts and other ites. Minimum spacing is specified on engineering docu-ments, and a number of installations have been noted where this minimum spacing requirment has been violated. This appeared to be cxxuring in areas where two different contractors are mounting supports adjacent to each other. For instance, a number of cases were noted where piping sup-ports and cable tray or conduit supports were mounted side by side.

Site contractors have sent Engineering, Quality Control and craft person-nel through a site " Anchor Bolt Installation" training class to ensure they are aware of anchor bolt spacing criteria. Also, the system comple-tion and turnover group has developed a work instruction fcr " Hanger Verification" to be used for system walkdcwn. At this time, anchor bolt spacing will be re-verified to assure they are installed properly to design documents.

If you have questions concerning this matter, r lease contact Mr. H.A.

Walker, Supervisor - Construction Quality Assu~ance.

Very truly yours,g o'i .
