Dear Sir:

Thre'e Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 2 (TMI-2)

Operating License No. DPR-73 Docket No. 50-320 Examination of PF 16 Liner Lid We request the lid from PF-16 undergo destructive examination. The information required from this examination is as follows:

1.

Type (s) of corrosion of lid.

2.

Expected failure mode (i.e. pinhole perforation, cracking, etc.)

if lid would remain on liners.

3.

Approximate average depth of corrosion (% total metal thickness).

This information is required to resolve expressed concerns on the potential failure mode (s) for the liner lid. This evaluation need not be a compre-hensive analysis but only sufficient to resolve the above questions with reasonable assurance of being accurate. Discussions with Mr. R. Ogle of the TMI TIO indicated that the required information could be provided in October 1981, which is adequate for our needs.
