20555 Re: Limerick Nuclear Reactor

Dear Mr. Schwencer:

The Philadelphia Electric Co.'s increasingly high rates are punishing all ratepayers, business and the residential community alike. The Linde Divi.sion of the Union Carbide Corp. has decided that the cost of electricity is so high in Essington, Pa., the plant will be moved in 1983 to a place where rates are cheaper.

The construction of the Limerick Nuclear Reactors is largely respcnsible for the high rates charged by Philadelphia Electric Co.

Construction of the Bailly nuclear power plant on the shore of Lake Michigan, only 30 miles from Chicago, has recently been abandoned by the Northern Indiana Public Service Co. af ter a ten year battle.

On May 29, 1980, the City Council of Philadelphia passed a resolution to cease construction of the Limerick Nuclear Reactors, only 21 miles from Philadelphia.

The closeness to Philadelphia of the Limerick plants threatens all Philadelphia. The experience of the Three Mile Island accident has caused the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to state no new plants would be built near cities. Limerick should be stopped now before more llillions are poured into this dangerous undertaking.

I urge denial of any operating license by the Licensing Branch of the Division of Licensing to protect the health and safety of Philadelphia residents and the ratepayers of Philadelphia Electric Co.

Sincerely, David Cohen DC/bg ec: Mr. Harold Denton Gov. Richard Thornburgh Mr. John Ahearne Ms. Katherine Mucchetti Mr. Peter Bradford Mr. Victor Gilinsky Mr. Joseph Hendric Hon. Joseph E.
