Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
On July 13, 1981 Mr. Virgil Brownlee of NRC, Region II was notified of a potential significant deficiency or potential substantial safety hazard concerning reported failures of nuclear qualified Rockbestos Company cable.
This interim report serves as the 30 day report.
Rockbestos Company had notified us by letters dated June 18, 1981 and July 30, 1981 that Rockbestos solid dielectric coaxial constructions may exhibit failures due to shorting of the center conductor to the braided shield for temperatures above 230'F.
SCE6G has identified some Rockbestos cable within the reactor building and SCE&G is investigating to determine if cables in the reactor building will have to be replaced.
Specific details will be provided in the final report.
