ED N' UM en Cr op rg, CHAIRMAN The Honorable Bruce King g
Governor of New Mexico.
Santa Fe, New Mexico 87503
Dear Governor King:
In 1976, the Nuclear Regulatory Comission (NRC) adopted reccanendations suggested by State organizations, including the National Governors' Association, for streamlining the siting and environmental review process for nuclear facilities.
One recomendation was that the States appoint. a single person to act as a liaison officer to NRC to improve Federal / State The Governors of all 50 States and the Comonwealth cf coopera tion.
Pue-to Rico responded favorably to this recomendation and appointed liaison officers.
The NRC staff works closely with the appointed State Liaison Officers (SLO)
. on all aspects of our programs, including transportation of radioactive w ste, siting, environmer.tal matters, decomissioning, emergency response, notification and waste disposal. The State Liaison Officer provides a communication channel between the States and the NRC; is the key person in the State to keep the Governor informed on regulatory c; emergency matters of interest to the Governor; keeps other State officials informed on regu-latory or emergency matters as appropriate to their interests ar.d/or responsibility; and provides information to NRC on State issues.
Dr. Theodore Wolff, Chief, New Mexico Radiation Protection Bureau, was t1e appointed State Liaison Officer to the NRC.
We understand Dr. Wolff has recently resigned from the New Mexico Radiation Protection Bureau.
I hope you will consider appointing a new individual to succeed Dr. Wolff as the New Mexico liaison officer to the NRC.
If you have any questions or wish additional information, your staff may wish to contact Wayne Kerr, Director of our Office of State Programs.
His telephone number is 501/492-8170.
We look forward to continuing our close working relationship with New Mexico.
Sincere?y,
~
