Dear Mr. Engelken:

This letter is an update of the actions being taken by Portland General Electric Company in response to IE Bulletin 79-18.

This Bulletin concerns potential audibility problems with the evacuatian alarm and paging systems at nuclear plants. By our letter of June 17, 1980, we committed to replace our present communication system within approxi-mately 1 year. We now expect this replacement to be complete by the end of 1983.

This extension is due in part to greater sophistication of the new system than originally anticipated. The new system will provide more flexibility and reliability for all plant communications. The present system will be maintained in a fully operable status with the previously discussed administrative controls continued in the interim period. We will keep you informed of any further changes.

If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely, Bart D. Withers Vice President hbclear I
