Subject:

Seismic Qualification of Maine Yankee Auxiliary Feedwater (AW)

System

Dear Sir:

Your letter, Reference (b), requested information concerning seismic design of Maine Yankee's Auxiliary Feedwater System. A review of the system has resulte! In the following:

1.

All piping from the discharge af the auxiliary feed pumps to the steam generator - with the excepticn of small bore minimim flow recirculation piping - was fully qualified ir the <tafe shutdown earthquake during initial <'esign and construc 1x.

2.

The majority of large bore ;uctie piping from the Demineralized Water Storag, Tank to the AW pumps was analyzed for seismic loads.

3.

A field walkdown of small bore branch piping revealt that the desien is for deadwefght, thermal, and pressure loads.

Seismic loads were not considered in the initial design and construction.

Table 1 of Enclusure I to Reference (b) lists AFW equipment, components and structures.

The table is repeated below with a comment on its status of seismic qualification.

The scope of the current program will be increased to include the seismic qualification of AEW piping which supplies each steam generator, to the safe shutdown earthquake. Small bore piping will be analyzed by the chart method or a dynamic analysis, and the valve actuators will either be qualified to seismic loads or replaced.

If in the conduct of ti.is program, deficiencies are found in the AEW system, corrective actions will be implemented and physical changes, if necessary, to assure the capability of feedwater delivery to the steam generator, will be accomplished during the next scheduled refueling outage.

We trust this information is satisfactory; however, should you require additional information, please contact us.
