Subject:

Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Rockbestos Coaxial Cable '

Problem (#45)

Dear Mr. Keppler:

On June 26, 1981, Detroit i'disor i Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assurance, telephond Mr. J. Smith of NRC Region III, to report on a problem with Rockbestos Coaxial Cable at the Fermi 2 site.

l Detroit Edison had received notification frcm the Rockbestos Cmpru:y that scme of their RSS type coaxial cable had failed while undergoing testing '

at a user's facility. This type cable is used at the Fermi 2 site, however, the specific cable that failed (RSS-6-104) is not used at the Fermi site.

The problem appears to involve all their 100 series type cable. Fermi had not received any of the RSS-6-104 cable, but the coaxial cable received frcm Rockbestos was 100 series cable. Rockbestos 100 series cable installed in the primary containment has been located.

Detroit Edison is awaiting the results of additional tests being performed by Rockoestos. After these results are received an evaluation.will be made to determine if additional action is requimd.

Another report on this item, either interim or final, is scheduled to be sent to you on or before November 20, 1981. If you have questions concerning this matter, please contact Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assur-ance.

Very truly yours, W
