Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Calibration of Torque Wrenches (#40)

Dear Mr. Keppler:

This additional interim report on the Calibration of Torque Wrench problem has been prepared to provide you with the current status of this problem.

The problem was originally reported to Mr. J.E. Konklin of NRC-Region III by Detroit Edison's Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assur-ance, on March 3, 1981.

Programs '?f all site contractors performing OA Level I torquing have been revieww. Deviation Disposition Requests were issued where hardware prob-lems were found. Procedures were revised 5/nere needed and purchase orders changed to provide the required control. DDR's which were written have been dispositioned to provide a 20% sampling of questionable torqued items to verify accuracy. Calibration frequencies used by the various contractors were reviewed, and in one case, the calibration interval was shortened.

Work is continuing on this problem.

Another report on this item, either interim or final, is scheduled to be sent to you on or before November 25, 1981. If you have questions concern-ing this matter please contact Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assurance.

Very truly yours, 0 Qg4 a
